It’s a small world for the Dutch Giant, Olivier Richters, the world’s tallest bodybuilder. / Instagram
At 7 feet 2 inches tall, Olivier Richters, aka “The Dutch Giant,” stands out in any crowd—literally. But it’s not just his towering height that draws attention; it’s the muscular physique he’s built through years of dedication to bodybuilding, coupled with his fast-emerging fame as an actor. From humble beginnings in the Netherlands to the spotlight of Hollywood, the Dutch Giant’s journey is nothing short of extraordinary. This is the tale of how a lanky, shy teenager turned himself into the world’s tallest bodybuilder, now seen on screens big and small around the globe.
“TOO TALL”
Born on September 5, 1989, in the small city of Hilversum in The Netherlands, Richters’ height was always a defining feature of his life. He was not just the tall kid but the freakishly “too tall” kid. His towering frame made him an easy target for bullying, and his gangly, slim build only exacerbated his insecurities. By his late teens, he had already reached 7 feet (213 centimeters), but rather than feeling empowered by his stature, Richters felt out of place everywhere but his own home. While most people assumed that his height automatically translated to strength, Richters knew this wasn’t the case.
“People would see me and think I must be strong, but in reality, I was very skinny. My height was a constant source of attention, and I didn’t feel like I had control over it,” the Dutch Giant said.
Tired of feeling uncomfortable in his own skin, Richters decided to take matters into his own hands. At the age of 18, he stepped into a gym for the first time, determined to transform his physique. He knew that in order to feel confident in his own body, he had to match his height with strength. Thus began his journey into the world of bodybuilding.
OLIVIER RICHTERS, UNLIKELY BODYBUILDER
Bodybuilding didn’t come easy for young Olivier Richters. Soon after he began his journey, doctors determined that he suffered from pectus excavatum, aka sunken chest, a ribcage deformity that put pressure on his heart. Recovering from the surgery (which broke his ribs) took six months. Afterwards, he was more frail than ever, but more determined than ever to change that.
Standing at over 7 feet, his body required far more calories and effort to build muscle compared to the average person. He now eats seven meals per day (most of which are pre-made and then microwaved), including an egg and oats breakfast that tallies 1400 calories and 85 grams of protein. He consumes 6500-7000 calories daily. The sheer size of his limbs meant that traditional exercises and routines needed to be adjusted to suit his unique frame. But the Dutch Giant was undeterred.
“I had to work twice as hard to see the same results as someone smaller,” he explained. “But I was determined to get bigger and stronger. It wasn’t just about looking good. It was about feeling strong and confident for the first time in my life.”

Over the years, Richters built a physique that matched his height. His once-slim frame became covered in muscle and his weight climbed to a lean 340 pounds (154 kg.), making him an imposing figure in and out of the gym and a unique celebrity in the bodybuilding world. He quickly gained attention not only for his size but also for his determination to succeed despite the challenges his height posed. “Bodybuilding is about more than just being big; it’s about balance, proportion, and discipline,” the Dutch Giant said. “I had to learn how to sculpt my body in a way that was aesthetically pleasing despite my height. It’s a lot harder than people think.”
WORLD’S TALLEST BODYBUILDER
His extreme height would be a disadvantage on a bodybuilder stage, where, despite his ultra-wide shoulders, his long limbs would appear slender next to men who stand over a foot shorter. (The Barbell determined that 5’9” to 5’11” is the ideal height for male professional bodybuilding success.) Olivier Richters has never competed in a bodybuilding contest. Nevertheless, he is, in sense, a professional bodybuilder. He is the CEO and co-owner of the bodybuilding food company, MuscleMeat, and he is paid for personal appearances and seminars in the bodybuilding/fitness community, all while living the bodybuilding lifestyle of frequent high-protein meals and a strict workout schedule.
In 2021, the Guinness World Records measured Olivier Ricthers at 218.3 cm. (7 feet and 1.94 inches) and listed him as the “Tallest Professional Bodybuilder (Male),” a distinction which he continues to hold.
BUILDING A HOLLYWOOD CAREER
The Dutch Giant’s striking appearance began to catch the attention of casting directors in Hollywood. With his towering height and a physique straight out of a comic book, Richters was a natural fit for roles that required imposing and sometimes unreal characters. His big break came when he was cast in the movie Black Widow (2021), playing a minor villain opposite Scarlett Johansson. “It was surreal to be on set with such big names,” Richters admitted. “But at the same time, I knew I belonged there. My size made me stand out, and it was something that Hollywood was looking for.”

Olivier Richters has since acted in The King’s Man, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Borderlands, and other films and TV programs. In addition to his intimidating size, his ability to move fluidly despite his large frame makes him a sought-after actor for roles in action and superhero films. His biggest role yet is Paulie, the nemesis of Jack Reacher in the third season of the Prime hit TV series Reacher. “In Hollywood, I realized that being tall and muscular wasn’t a disadvantage—it was my superpower,” the Dutch Giant said. “People always remember me, and that’s an advantage in an industry where standing out is crucial.”
THE DUTCH GIANT’S POSITIVE MESSAGE
Olivier Richters has cultivated a significant following on social media, where he shares his fitness journey, workout routines, and snippets of his daily life (he and his wife recently welcomed their first child, a daughter). With nearly 700,000 followers on Instagram, Richters has become an online fitness icon. Fans admire not only his physique but also his determination and positivity.
“I want to show people that no matter what challenges you face, whether it’s being too tall, too skinny, or anything else, you can overcome it if you work hard enough,” Richters said. “I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin for a long time, but bodybuilding gave me the confidence I needed.”
The Dutch Giant uses his platform to inspire others to embrace their unique qualities and to take control of their lives through fitness. He also shares the ups and downs of being a literal giant in a world built for average-sized people. “Being this tall has its challenges, like finding clothes or fitting into cars,” he explained in one post. “But at the end of the day, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. My height is part of who I am.”

“Your weaknesses can become your strengths if you work on them,” Richters said in a recent interview. “I’ve learned that the things that make you different are often the things that make you special. You just have to embrace them.”
OLIVIER RICHTERS: STILL GROWING
As he continues to build his career, on and off screens, Olivier Richters remains grounded in his mission to inspire others. “I never imagined my life would turn out this way, but I’m grateful for every opportunity,” he said. “I want people to see that anything is possible if you’re willing to put in the work.”

From the gyms of the Netherlands to the bright lights of Hollywood, the Dutch Giant is living proof that with enough determination, even the tallest challenges can be overcome. Above all else, never stop growing as a person.
